Stillwater Medical Center Heart & Vascular Institute

Stillwater Medical Center wanted their Heart & Vascular Institute closer to the ER as well as enhance testing, care, and services currently provided. They also wanted to increase the number of cardiologists and other experts on their cardiac team. This project included a renovation of the first floor of the existing building and construction of a new two-story addition, the majority of which is constructed over the existing first-story space. The project also included a new elevator inside the existing building to serve the new second-story overbuild. Two existing air handling units (AHUs) were relocated to the new roof over the new second story.

Analyses were performed on the existing structure to evaluate the capacity of the existing gravity load framing, lateral load framing, and foundations to determine their adequacy to support the new addition.  As a result, several new cast-in-place reinforced concrete shear walls were added to the existing structure to accommodate the additional lateral loads from the new addition.

The new roof structure consists of a steel deck over open web steel joists and steel beams supported by steel columns either supported by new pier and grade beam foundations or posted up from the existing concrete structure.

On the north side of the second floor, a composite system of concrete slab on deck and composite steel beams forms the structure for an expansion to the second floor. The new floor structure was designed to accommodate the loads imposed on the structure by the medical equipment. The roof structure was also designed to accommodate loads from planned hanging medical equipment.

The construction had to occur while the emergency room and hospital remained operational. The contractor worked to ensure patient, visitor, and employee disruption was minimized.
