The Animal Shelter for the City of Newcastle is located adjacent to its current Water Resources office. The new building is a one-story 4,500 square-foot building that includes a 500-sq. ft. covered dog run area and a 500 sq. ft. outdoor play area. The facility can house 27 dogs and 12 cats at one time and has spacious living quarters and outdoor exercise areas for its four-legged residents replacing an outdoor shelter only able to accommodate four animals at once. A welcoming lobby and comfortable adoption area enables new parents to interact with their new family addition.
The building has a curtain wall framed entry vestibule with a shade/screen wall structure at the front of the building. There is a covered canopy structure connecting the new Animal Shelter to the existing Water Resources office.
The structural system for the new building is a combination of structural steel framing and CMU. The roof structure utilizes a metal roof deck supported by steel joists and steel beams. The roof framing is supported by perimeter load-bearing CMU walls and an interior line of steel columns. Spaces within the building are framed with non-load bearing CMU partition walls. The foundation system consists of a concrete slab-on-grade with continuous and spot near surface bearing footings.
The entry vestibule and the shade screen wall structure are framed with structural steel framing with steel angle “roof” and a perforated metal screen wall material. The entry canopy and connector canopy to the water resources building are pre-manufactured metal canopies.
